Gender, fashion and design

Photo: David Wagner

This theme focuses on consumption and the part it plays in the construction of gender, aswell as the way consumer products both reaffirm and questions the cultural understandings of masculine, feminine and unisex. The notion that gender is something stable and given have been strongly questioned in later years. In several projects we study this change and how it is reflected in consumer cultures. The research theme spans across several different disciplines. Particularly, fashion and design are studied through different perspectives. The following themes are studied in our projects.

  • Design that challenges norms
  • Digital consumer culture and gender, fashion blogs and closet-apps
  • Mass produced packages and portrayals of gender as something flowing
  • Aesthetic work in retail
  • The marketization of consumer culture
