Lena holds a PhD. in Business Administration and her research concerns consumer culture, consumption and design, Universal design and social sustainability, gender issues related to design and recently market communication and older consumers (55+ consumers). She defended her doctoral thesis Universal design - a marketable or utopian concept in 2006 and has been working in two major interdisciplinary projects: "Commercial culture in an ethnological and economical perspective", financed by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation (2002-2005), and "Design & Gender", a co-operation between researchers representing Ethnology, Business Administration, and Design, and financed by Vinnova (2005-2008). Other projects are a consumer study of 55+ housing from a social sustainability and design perspective and the current study of consumer images in market communication, a study of 55+ consumers and ageism.

Lena is also associated member of Business & Design Lab and the Marketing group, Department of Business Administration, both at School of Business, Economics, and Law, University of Gothenburg. She is also teaching and work as a tutor at the undergraduate and master level in Marketing courses.
